Crowns and Bridges
Crowns and bridges are commonly used to repair badly damaged teeth or replace missing teeth. With modern advancements in technology these restorations can now be colour matched to your teeth, providing a natural looking dental finish.
Crowns (sometimes referred to as 'dental caps') cover over and encase the tooth. They are cemented in place and are often the best way to repair a weakened tooth, whether it’s weakened due to a large filling, cavity or because the tooth has had root canal therapy.
Crowns can be made from porcelain, metal, gold or a combination of these materials. Porcelain crowns are matched to the shade of your surrounding teeth and placed over your natural tooth that is shown above the gum. Dependant on the treatment required, we can offer porcelain fused to gold crown or a Cerec ceramic crown. Both are very strong and tooth colored.
Bridges are just one of the options offered to replace one or more missing teeth. It used the remaining teeth to support the new artificial tooth or teeth. There are different types of bridges available including fixed, bonded and cantilever bridges. A fixed bridge consists of an artificial porcelain tooth anchored on either side by natural teeth that have had crowns placed on them as well. The artificial tooth is known as the pontic and the supporting teeth are known as the abutments.
A Bonded bridge uses wings on each side of the false tooth that are bonded to the teeth on either side of the gap. A cantilever bridge is used on patients who don’t have a tooth on either side of the gap. It is attached to the tooth only on one side.
Bridges can be made from porcelain, metal or a combination of these materials. This option is also available with one or more missing teeth. However sometimes dental implants may be a better option.
All the crowns and bridges made at Thirroul Dental Care are either made on site or made in an Australian laboratory.
